In Fusion, deaths are just a special kind of out cohort. When an animal dies, it's important to record the death on the same day. Typically, the yard crew creates a basic out cohort death record, which you can later edit by adding more details. Alternatively, you can also create a completely new out cohort in the office to record a death if you prefer.

Let's go through the process of editing a death out cohort created by the yard crew. To view the list of out cohorts, make sure you have the Fusion Core menu active, and then select "List Out Cohorts" from the Cohorts menu. You'll notice that the Out Reason column indicates which out cohorts are for deaths. Locate the specific out cohort you want to edit and double-click on it.

If you're satisfied with the information on the first screen, switch to the "Page 2" tab. If a post-mortem examination was performed, you can enter the name of the veterinarian who conducted it. You also have the option to associate an input line item with the death, which will be charged back to the lot.

Please note that changing the out count or out date requires additional information from you and is covered in another video. It's best to ensure this information is entered correctly right from the start.

Once you've finished entering your information, click on "Save."

Now, let's briefly go over how you would record a death from scratch in the office. With the Out Cohorts list window open, you can either click on the "New" button or choose "New Out Cohort" from the Cohorts menu.

The same window will appear. The Entity field will display a pop-over, allowing you to select the group to which the dead animal belonged. If the pop-over doesn't appear, simply click within the Entity field. You'll need to enter a pen, and if the pen contains multiple lots, specify the lot as well. Remember to press "Tab" after filling in each field to ensure they are registered, and then click "OK."

While technically Fusion allows you to record multiple deaths from the same pen and lot simultaneously, we recommend recording them separately. Therefore, you should enter "1" as the count.

It's a good practice to link the dead animal to its death record. To do this, click on the "Linked Animals" button. Here we'll choose the "Link By Query" option. Assuming we know the animal's tag was "28-0005," we can find it in the list, select it, and click on "Link Selected." Other linking options are explained in another video.

Fusion will estimate the weight based on the information available, but you can modify it if necessary. Feel free to make changes to any other information as needed. However, it's crucial to change the Out Reason to "Death" and select a cause of death.

Take a moment to review the information for accuracy, and then click "Save." The death will now be recorded. If it was the last animal in a lot, the lot will automatically be closed, and all individual animals connected to the lot will be marked as non-current. Feed trucks will receive these updates after their next full sync.
