Keyboard Profile Edit Window

If you are using an electronic keyboard for faster data entry during chuteside jobs, you will need to create a keyboard profile for each keyboard you use. The profile lets Fusion know what you want to have happen when each key is pressed. This window allows you to create and edit profiles.

Please note that Fusion only works with the model 90 PKB-FMTH-C2-SSG1 electronic keyboard from Electronic Keyboards, Inc. This model has 90 keys and it is possible to customize the look of the keyboard, either manually or by using this window.

Creating a New Profile

When you create a brand new profile, this window will open showing all the buttons blank. The fastest way to get started is to click the gear button and choose Auto Layout Starter. This will layout the keypad and set attributes buttons. It will also look at your defined breeds, colors, and cattle types and lay out as many of them as possible. It will also see if you have any contacts in a Buyer or Source category and lay them out as well. At this point you can make any changes you want.

Remember to give the profile a name. This is especially important if you have more than one keyboard profile since you will need to match the profile with an actual keyboard in the Physical Computer Management window so that Fusion can properly interpret key presses.

Editing a Profile

Selecting Keys

Click a key to select it. If you want to change an attribute for more than one key, Shift-Click additional keys. If you Shift-Click a key that is already selected, it will be deselected.

Background Color

If you want to change the background color of the entire keyboard (the area behind the buttons), click the rectangle next to the Main Background Color label. You can also Right-Click on this rectangle to copy or paste a color.

Key Function

Each key can have a function which you set by changing the Function Type and Function. The function's available depend on the function type you have chosen. Most function types are self explanatory, but two need further explanation:

  • Add Keypad Digit. This type allows you to create a keypad with the digits 0-9 and the negative sign and decimal point. Each time one of these keys is hit, Fusion changes an internal variable to reflect what you have typed so far.
  • Set From Keypad. After you have used the keypad digits to enter a number, touching one of these types of keys will send the number to the specified function. For example, if you had just typed 48.3 on the keypad and then touched the Hip Height button, Fusion would enter 48.3 in the Hip Height field of the Change Attributes subjob. You could then enter another number and touch a different function to set that value. Note that each time you touch a Set From Keypad button, Fusion clears the keypad number so it is ready for the next entry. (This internal variable is also cleared each time a new animal enters the chute.

Please note that an appropriate subjob must exist in the job for these buttons to work. It can be hidden and it doesn't have to be selected, but it must exist and not skipped. For example, to change the sex to Male or Female using the keyboard, there must be a Change Attributes subjob or it will be ignored. To change an ultrasound related value, there must be an Ultrasound subjob.

Label

When you choose a function for a key, Fusion will automatically provide a label for the button. Use this field to adjust the label. You may want to change it entirely or just adjust the line breaks depending on the font size you want to use. Of course, this only matters if you are going use the picture in printing a new keyboard.

Fonts and Colors

These attributes also only matter if you are printing a new keyboard. They allow you to change the font, size, style, and text color of the button labels. You can also change the background color of the button. Right-Clicking on the font color or background color fields gives you the option to copy or paste a color.

Clearing the Keyboard

If you want to start with a blank keyboard again, click the gear button and choose Clear Entire Keyboard. You can also clear a button at a time by Right-Clicking the button and choosing Clear.

Copying/Pasting Buttons

You can copy and paste buttons by Right-Clicking on a button and choosing Copy or Paste. This will copy or paste the function type, function, label, and font and coloring information.

Programing a Keyboard

As mentioned before, this window can be used for two purposes, one of which is letting Fusion know how to respond to each key touch. If this is the only purpose, you just need to set the correct function type and function for each key and save the profile. There is no need to worry about labels, coloring, etc.

Purchasing a Keyboard

The other purpose of the window is to help you create a customized look for your keyboard and help you purchase it. Once you have the keyboard looking the way you want visually, click the gear button and choose Email Electronic Keyboards Inc. This will upload a picture of the keyboard and then open your default email application with an email that is partially written. It will be addressed to Jim Bowen at Electronic Keyboards Inc. and will include the model number of the keyboard that will work with Fusion as well as a link to the picture that was just uploaded. You can finish off the email however you like and this will give the company enough information to create your customized keyboard. (Please note that we have no connection with Electronic Keyboards Inc. other than that they were willing to create a model number that ensures that the keyboard will work with Fusion. You will have to talk to them about pricing and support issues.)

The above method assumes you are using an email client on your computer like Outlook Express or Apple Mail. If the method does not work you can use the gear button to save the image and then create your own email. Make sure you attach the image. Contact information can be found on their website.

If you require further customization to the look of the keyboard than this window offers, you will need to use a drawing/painting application and create your own picture to email them. Note that they require the picture to be a TIFF image with 1463 x 563 pixels at 150 DPI. Please contact them for more details.

Using a Keyboard During a Job

Connecting the Keyboard

The keyboard will need to connect to a serial port on the computer. It also expects +5VDC at 50ma for power so you may need to purchase a power supply that matches that.

Telling Fusion About the Keyboard

In the Physical Computer Management window check the Keyboard Profile(s) checkbox on the chuteside computer where the electronic keyboard is attached. Then click the Setup button. Click the + button to choose a profile and then select the port the keyboard is connected on. You can use the same profile multiple times, but each keyboard must be connected to a different port.

When a chuteside job begins it will open a connection to each keyboard listed here and begin listening for key presses.

Getting Here

You can open this window by creating or editing a keyboard profile from the Keyboard Profiles List window.
